Another personality poseA personality pose is a custom high-resolution image of a character from the film. These publicity stills convey a sense of the character’s attitude and persona, and are used to promote the film by the studio and its marketing partners. created while in the Creative Services department at Pixar, for the Disney/Pixar film Ratatouille. Anton Ego, voiced by Peter O’Toole in the film, serves as the catalyst for the film’s plot: Ego’s withering review of Auguste Gusteau’s eponymous Paris restaurant results in the loss of two of Gusteau’s five stars, and the death of the heartbroken chef.
Beginning with a pose from the animation department, I created the high-resolution shot, generated the simulation data for Ego’s clothing and scarf, then lit, rendered and composited the raw image. I subsequently brought it into Photoshop for further enhancing and retouching into its final finished state.
Paintfixes & retouching
Rendering errors, usually unnoticeable at film resolution, became evident at the higher resolutions we worked at in Creative Services, and necessitated post-render retouching in Photoshop. Intersections in the clothing simulation, texture errors along the contours of Ego’s velvet suit, banding in the skin shader and final pose tweaks were resolved with layers of digital paint.
