These publicity stills convey a sense of the character’s attitude and persona, and are used to promote the film by the studio and its marketing partners., for the Disney / Pixar film Cars. Cars presented a number of technical challenges, in particular regarding the use of ray-tracingRay-tracing is a computer graphics rendering technique based on simulating the paths of individual light beams as they pass through and interact with objects in a scene. It is particularly well-suited for depicting reflections, refraction and other optical effects, but has a higher cost in terms of rendering time and computing resources. Ray-tracing produces highly realistic results and is ideal for depicting the glossy ultra-reflective finish of an automobile, but it is computationally very expensive and requires greater resources and longer rendering times. The rendering team deserves ample recognition for creating techniques that made this feasible on the scale of a feature film. In Creative Services, the high resolution imagery we created increased the rendering times and resource requirements even further. For many of our final images it was necessary to dice the image into chunks small enough for the renderer to handle, and even then it was not unusual for our final image renders to take several days to complete.

Paintfixes & retouching

Between the many optical qualities utilized for Cars (reflection, refraction, occlusion, motion-blur) and the higher resolution that we in Creative Services worked at, the rendered imagery required a fairly high degree of retouching.
